I like it. It covers all sides in a somewhat “subtle” way. I knew when the sunspot cycle was changing I would have something to gloat about with the AGW Luddites (amateur astronomer for over 35 years). Sadly, I am not gloating about this anymore. Without heavy investment in energy production (especially nuclear) these idiots are going to get us all killed. Thanks for the post.

On Amazon:

Cheers!

Well, as the Canadian glacier wipes those people off the map, we can all move to Arizona. :-)

This means we need to implement a carbon tax before it's too late.

I especially liked his generosity in the even of impending cataclysm.

No, but thanks for the suggestion. I used to read Pournelle’s “Chaos Manor” column in Byte magazine. I didn't know about his fiction writing then.

Not yet... thus far I’m just evaluating the messenger.

I think what really drives Al Gore to a frenzy is his fear that the the world will dramatically cool, and that people will notice, before he and the other global warming alarmists can claim credit it for it.

Not a lot of basic plant foods and quantity and, the government is banning the use of flames as it causes havoc on the environment and so your on your own.

Thanks, guys. Just the other day I saw a handout where they were supposed to circle which was the "better" choice. The bold is what she had led them to choose:

Paper towels or terry-cloth towel
Plastic bag or paper bag
Paper plate or china plate
Glass or styrofoam cup

I asked him which he would rather dry his hands on, a clean paper towel or the terry-cloth towel his mom uses to wipe things up with. I said that the trees to make the paper towels were renewable resources and that they were a lot cleaner to use than everybody grabbing the terry-cloth towel. And you had to spend time, energy, water, and soap to wash the towel. I said it was the same with the other products. Each had its appropriate use and was better for that use than the other. A plastic bag was a lot cheaper to produce than a paper bag and made it a lot easier to carry in more groceries at once and that its expense was a pretty good indication of its impact on the environment in producing it.

They had some other "experiment" in which they put food coloring into water to represent oil spilled into the ocean and then questions asking them to imagine what would happen to an animal in contact with oil and to think of ways they could lessen the likelihood of oil spills. I reminded him that millions of gallons of oil leaked naturally into the ocean every day from underwater oil seeps and that some ecosystems were dependent on it. I said that offshore drilling could lessen the natural seepage but at the cost of harming those ecosystems. Ha ha ha. I told him to tell the teacher than even such disasters as the Exxon Valdez, which was predicted to have practically unalterable effects on the environment, are quickly mitigated by nature.

And in another lesson on air pollution and deforestation, I had to point out to him that the air is cleaner now in the U.S. than at almost any time during the last 100 years, especially in urban areas, and that there are more trees than there were 100 years ago and that CO2 was a good, good thing because without it we'd all be dead, having nothing to eat or breathe because all the plants would be dead.

I feel sort of sorry for these earnest young teachers who don't bother to go beyond what they happen to read in the text and in the "study materials" prepared for classroom use by the publisher of the text. I suggested he tell her to check out www.co2science.org for all her questions about CO2.

so burning fossil fuels would be a good thing?

According to the Warmists, yes. It's all about climate change, not global warming, so we would need to do something to heat the world up to keep it at its current temperature. Some ideas:

a) Burn the forests. All of them;
b) Drive all day, every day, in a large vehicle. Extra points for black exhaust;
c) Cultivate cattle, give them a chili diet to increase their methane output. Eat a lot of chili yourself;
d) Live like a movie/rock star and/or liberal politician.

A number a years back I was returning from a project in Mexico and stopped in Galveston to visit a friend. My friend invited others along for a picnic on the beach. For two hours I had to keep a strait face (per my friends request), when his girlfriend complained about all of the tar balls and the evil oil companies that caused it (seep balls). I bit my tongue, but I did remind my friend that cheap dates like his friend are very expensive long term.

I wish I had your stamina.

The article is saying that the next ice age, due in about 100 ky, may be delayed by 500 ky because of all the carbon we’re adding. It’s not claiming that we were headed for an ice age 8000 ky after we just came out of one. There was a brief dip into colder climes as we were coming out of the last one, but some people think that was due to a comet impact over the Wisconsin glacier (iridium layers again).

Good find!

“Ice ages occur around every 100,000 years as the pattern of Earth’s orbit alters over time. Changes in the way the sun strikes the Earth allows for the growth of ice caps, plunging the Earth into an ice age. But it is not only variations in received sunlight that determine the descent into an ice age; levels of atmospheric CO2 are also important.”
