Ahhhh. Thanks.
Probably better to be out of the Taipei basin in a big quake!
Have a blessed week.
I lived on Tien Mou She Lu (sp?), across the street from several fast-food shops.
Better across from fast food shop than a temple , unless of course you like firecrackers at 3 AM :-)
The one north of TAS was close enough! LOL.
Mostly got to where I could almost sleep through it even on Chinese New year . . . depending on . . . the intensity of such goings on.
Are you Native or Wy Gwo Ren/ Barbarian?
God’s best to you and yours.
Yeah I have one about a few blocks away. Don’t even notice the sounds now. I prefer that to living across from a “stinky tofu” stand ( Stinky is a kind word for it. Should be called putrid !!! )
Wo she wai guo ren.( as evidenced by the eyeballing and occasional shrieks :-) )
Kinda what I thought— happening in a variety of places! Thanks!
I was stationed at Kadena AB from 1979 - 1980. I have been to White Beach.
I understand Okinawa pretty much ‘cleaned’ itself up in the late 60’s or early 70’s when it reverted back to Japan.
Looking at the graphic on #14? looks like the ‘tidal wave or Tsunami’ will engulf the entire island....
Was homeported Yokosuka Japan 60-62 and didn’t find any ‘bad’ liberty in that part of the world....
Ah yes !! Nominue Naha, Kin Village, Naha in the South, Kin in the North. In the middle, you had Koza City with BC and Gate 2 streets, “the Alley”, and Koza 4 corners which was where the “brothers” hung out. Every marine that was bound for the “Nam” stopped their on the way to and fro, and also R&R. It was also under occupation status from WW2. B’52’s used to run out of Kadena AFB. 40,000 American service people, many with dependents. I was 19 and bulletproof. 18 months on the rock. Race riots (our GI’s), political riots, (Japanese citizens seeking autonomy), and barroom brawls you wouldn’t believe. 67-70 it was like the wild wild west. The survival skills that have served me for the past 40 years were learned here as a young MP.
Ah yes...Nominu Naha, Kin Village etc....
= = = = = = = = = = = = =
The ‘race’ problems were almost non-existent late 50’s early 60’s....
Leaving White Beach going up the Highway (#1?) the villages were numbered till you got to Crossroads...you would ‘work’ the bars on the right and do a Ueee at XRoads (fore mentioned Bros<:) and work your way back down to the beach.
Some made it, some didn’t.
Don’t know if you ever made Olangapo PI but the game there was to cross the $hit River Bridge and work all the bars on the right then cross the street and come back down...
Between the High Humidity and Heat Very very few made it...
Took a lot of practice but........
In PI we had to use the buddy system cause the ‘HUKS’ were known to come into town and snatch a lone serviceman....
But it was worth it (the risk)....<:
Were you Marine or USA? I would imagine the latter since you didn’t mention Camps Butler, Hansen or Schwab??
I flew out of Kadena in 62 as RM2(E5) on my way to Submarine School, got a chance to show the ladies in that area how crazy a Sailor could be.
Got thrown off 2 planes for being somewhat intoxicated —
But finally left “The Rock” with enough memories to last 2 lifetimes.......
Indeed.
I roller skated one Chinese New Year’s eve from Shiang Kai Shek Memorial all the way home on Tien Mou West Rd the long way around by Da Yeh Taka Shi Mai Ya. Loved it. There was very little traffic. I think I got home about 22:00-23:00.
Agreed.
Never acquired a taste for it in the least.
