“”The preponderance of evidence is that global warming will resume,” Nicholas Bond”

Aside from unvalidated computer models, I’m not sure what that “evidence” is.

It is certainly not any of that old fashioned stuff of stating a hypothesis in advance, using the hypothesis to make a prediction about reality that is different than other hypotheses would predict, and then testing whether the evidence is consistent with the prediction to predetermined confidence levels.

This is a CLIMATE CHANGE issue!

I believe we are presently waiting for cycle 24 to make a real showing. As of now, there have been 181 spotless days in 2009 and there were 266 spotless days in 2008. 2007 had over 160 spotless days. One has to go back to 1911, 1912 and 1913 to find a three year period with more spotless days. Yep, could be the beginning of a Mauder Minimum Redux.

Well put. The scientists can “predict” a 1 degree increase over the next century but couldn’t predict a cooling trend over one DECADE.

Wait, aren't the ice caps melting NOW? Are they melting in anticipation of heat?

According to data from the National Space Science and Technology Center in Huntsville, Ala. , the global high temperature in 1998 was 0.76 degrees Celsius (1.37 degrees Fahrenheit) above the average for the previous 20 years.

They always like to start their trend from the middle 1970s to show global warming as the mid 1970s were a cool time after about four decades of global cooling.

If they started their trending in 1934 it would show 1998 as a bit cooler than 1934 and the long term trend would be almost flat therefore not requiring new taxes, rationing and government control.

"The preponderance of evidence is that global warming will resume," Nicholas Bond , a meteorologist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory in Seattle , said in an e-mail.

I wonder if he realizes that's a legal term of art meaning "50% of the evidence plus one sliver." So much for "the debate is over."

So the earth has been cooling for eleven years and the New York Times hasn’t figured it out yet?

I have been an avid follower of the activity on The Sun for more than 6 years, pretty much daily, as well as looking in detail at raw data from earlier years: sunspot data, 10.7 data, SOHO, STEREO -

I have NEVER seen Sol as “quiet”, “featureless”, whatever you wish to label it, as it has been during the past month.

About 2 months ago, there were strong thoughts that Sol was “waking up” and Cycle24 would start to pick up. I considered that likely. The last 2 weeks I have gone from questioning what is going on to seriously concerned about the lack of activity. NOT ONE PERSON ALIVE TODAY has been aware of a period of quietude similar to this current minimum. It is increasingly likely every day that goes by with Sun in such a quiet state, that it is more quiet than it has been in several hundred years. It is NOT understood, but such quiet states have been highly correlated with COLD temperatures on Earth.

Sol SHOULD be ramping up in activity right now, and rapidly. Every solar scientist thinks that ought to be true. If it does not do so very soon, there are going to be a whole load of scientists going back to the drawing board to reconsider the data and the hypotheses.

Proving once again that real scientists reevaluate and tweak theory, to better match the data; junk scientists tweak the 'data' to better fit the theory.

"The preponderance of evidence is that global warming will resume,"

They sound like cultists explaining to their followers why the Messiah didn't return at exactly 2:47 PM last Thursday like they said he would.

It is good that some people understand the “scientific method”.

When we can not “run experiments” to create data to support or disprove theory, we are constrained to ACCURATE observation and interpretation of data that is presented to us. In cosmology, solar science, climatology, and many other fields, that is all we can do. I believe that climatology the “science” that has been the most abhorrent in accomplishing being faithful to this principle.

Right now, we have a serious concern about The Sun, and with every quarter that passes in this quiet state, that concern grows greater. The only thing that gives me comfort is that historically it has taken a LOT longer for Earth to cool into an Ice Age than it warming.

Believe me: I don’t want to see my children or my children’s children having to deal with our falling into an Ice Age, or even a “Little Ice Age”.

If I were forced to bet, right now I would bet that we’re entering a Little Ice Age period. Not good for people who like to eat. I’m rooting for a minor weakness in Sol’s output instead, but it is not giving me any solace this month.
