Last one was probably Tanguska (sp?)in Siberia about 100 years ago.
Interesting!
About two weeks ago, I was out in the backyard (Central Calif) around 10-11pm gazing at the stars. All of a sudden a bright fiery meteor shot across the overhead skies, east to west. Largest meteor I’ve ever seen with a tail of flames. Short lived light-show but mighty impressive.
>That would be a site to see!
Definitely hugh ...
Gee!
Looking at the smoke trail of this meteor, it looks like it must have acted like the JFK bullet!
Geography is your friend. Latvia and Indonesia are nowhere near Kansas City. They are foreign locales, easily located on Google Earth and situated in very different parts of the planets
Imagine the damage if, say, Ted Kennedy re-entered the atmosphere!
There was definitely a second, unseen astroid.
?
I understand there is a good sized asteroid that will have a near miss with earth sometime in the next decade, and while there is no significant chance it will hit during that pass, some eggheads have figured out that if it passes through a certain ‘window,’ then a clean hit is assured sometime in the late 2030s, and it would be pretty destructive (though not ending life on earth, or anything like that).
Probably less damage than he has done so far before exiting the atmosphere.
But you would have to build a new class of rocket just to lift him in to orbit.
Comment directed at RaceBannon. Indonesia is nowhere near Latvia. Neither are close to Kansas City, my location.
Asteroid hits the Earth. Ok, where? With today’s technology, its very easy to figure out where and to understand how that is related to other reports of natural phenomena. A bridge too far for some.
We’re all too busy freeping.
“THAT is MOST disconcerting. “
No kidding.
Just imagine a hit over Manhattan. Or worse, over Moscow or a Russian ICBM site.
WW3 could start easily.
Instead of the foolish global warming junk science; we should really focus more on a threat like this.
billions for global cooling warming weather... but pay no attention to the falling rocks from space
There's a hidden danger in this and I just hope we're still on the ball.
Back in the '70s some scientists and govt types came to our college and talked about the nuclear stalemate between us and Russia. Somebody asked what were the chances that the Red Chinese would lob one of their own at either party, trying to start WWIII between us. One guy took the question and said, "The first bomb is free.", which drew a gasp from the audience. He went on to say that both sides were well aware of such a tactic and neither would fly off the handle if a BIG explosion went off on their territory.
He said what started that train of thought, which no one in govt had addressed before, was when the Russians were building something on the outskirts of Stalingrad in the '60s. One of the bulldozers uncovered a HUGE ammo dump left by the Germans - to the amount of 20 kilotons. The guy said the the ammo was pretty touchy as it had deteriorated and that if the dozer would have hit a shell the wrong way, the whole works would have gone off with a Hiroshima-type blast - that's why "The first bomb . . ." response was put into place.
That deal was between two rational world powers. Now fast forward to the near future when Iran has the Bomb, and a similar asteroid explosion goes off over an Israeli city, or worse yet, hits anywhere in Israel. Would the First Bomb still be free?
1/233 years....when was that last one?
Latvia and Indonesia are on different planets?
I must have missed something...I bet it was
spectacular.
From Armageddon
President: We didn't see this thing coming?
Dan: Well, our object collison budget's a million dollars. That allows us to track about 3% of the sky, and beg'n your pardon sir, but it's a big-ass sky.
Sure doesn’t look like a 50KT bang.
An intervention is in order. I said nothing about different planets, just their extreme distance from one another, in planetary terms. I suspect the mushrooms that you are eating. Stop right now, and seek medical help. It may not be too late. Good luck to you.
