Not when you hardly ever get them, it isn’t.
My guess - I am no geologist
Piezoelectric discharge?
Here in CA a 3.5 is like a “Thank you, Mom.”
I’m intrigued by the lightning and fireball though. We had a similar lightning display here during and after the Northridge quake. I’ve researched it and have some theories about what might cause it.
Tin foil thought: What if this is a test of an Earthquake causing weapon?
It would come in handy if the area around the nuke sites in NK and Iran were tragically hit by huge earthquakes that flattens everything for hundreds of miles.
Former Sec of Defense Cohen seemed to let on that such weapons are in the works:

Probably something akin to chewing Spearmint Lifesavers. They actually do spark, you can see it in the dark.
Mr Nelson Paging Mr Nelson
Please pick up the white ball lightning phone Mr Nelson
Earthquakes and lightning? Next come the Tripods. Run....
Yea, it is, but the last earthquake that large in Nebraska was in October of 1972. The biggest one in the 20th century was March of 1964 and it was only 5.1. I remeber that one, because of what it was associated with. (Like the first time I danced with Bonnie I. (but it wasn't the last. My cousin was in the band, and he changed the words of "See the Girl with the Red Dress On..." giving her a blue dress, since that's what Bonnie was doing. Nice girl, smart, big ... well never mind. :). I don't know what happened to her of late. Last time I saw her was probably 1988 at a reunion.
Ummm, time to share...
Yeah they have it, it was in Under Siege 2.
I bet it was an exploding meteor. It was an overcast night. It would be more likely a train of meteors happened along.
Not content with causing Katrina, that evil genius Karl Rove is at it again.
“Perhaps God is sending Nelson a message!”
LOL! Yeah, we always had suspicions about Auburn where I grew up. Let’s see now, Auburn would be Sodom, and Nebraska City would be...... Nah! That’s crazy talk.
Still........
Sometimes an earthquake is just an earthquake.
I thought that was “Thank you ma’am,” as in “Wham, bam, thank you ma’am!”
If they ever get a foot of snow in LA life will be worth observing for awhile. On the other hand I still have a whole lot of the 12 inches of snow that fell in my front yard a week ago. And your New England is going to get that and maybe more tonght and tomorrow.
The fireball report fascinates me because I was one of thousands who saw this one years ago in New Mexico: GREEN FIREBALL
Guess where you’re from there aren’t any sharp dips in roads that give you a little thrill when driving over them . I’m familiar with your saying too but it doesn’t have anything to do with Mom. Oedipus, is that you?
Strange smells at New Madrid, MO.
Probably sulphur and methane from rotted vegetation exposed to the air from cracks. People reported seeing the land roll in 5 foot high waves, and forests falling over as if they were mowed down. Three huge 8 plus quakes in 1811 and 1812, plus thousands of smaller ones like 6 and 7. There was also one in 1812 that killed about 20,000 people in Venezuela.
