You can bet there are some awfully jumpy folks on the western end of New Guinea along about now...

Is your family on New Guinea — or are they in northern Australia — or somewhere else nearby?

The area where it hit is a region which has turned from animism and has embraced Christianity. They are very poor.

Do you have family in Papua? Perhaps I know them. My husband is the band director at the school in Sentani, Hillcrest International.

Indonesia cannot catch a break.

Moslem country. They don't need a break, they need to repent and be broken. Apparently the last go round wasn't enough of a wake up call.

Just saw post 48. If true that is a very good thing. Now if the rest of the country will just turn around.

Again??? The Pacific “ring of fire” sure has been active in the last few years.

Here is data of earthquake activity over the past 150 or so years:

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
[...and still counting until 2014]

"this trend needs to be understood in relation to the increase in seismographs. Certainly, in the last 25 years, more lower intensity earthquakes have been noticed because of a general increase in the number of seismograph stations across the world and improved global communications. This increase has helped seismological centres to locate many small earthquakes which were undetected in earlier decades. Therefore, an upward trend is not unexpected in the graph, although the rise in the number of large earthquakes will be of more significance to our assessment of the trend.

By limiting the range of earthquakes being counted in this report to magnitude 7 or above, it means these earthquakes can easily be identified by a limited number of seismographs, and we have ensured that any increase in frequency for these larger earthquakes cannot be down to the increase in overall detection rates in this 25-year period, as all these larger earthquakes are able to be easily detected with fewer seismograph stations."

California seems to be having a lot of little quakes. They were averaging 200-300 a week last year. This year it’s gone up to 500-700 and today the map says there have been 1263 in the past week. That’s a lot of little shaking.

Abby would barely notice a tsunami in the middle of the ocean.

They get bigger as they approach land.
