A lot of the quakes happened in Papua, near the Biak. The villagers are very poor. Their homes are built on wooden stilts. There is no way that the houses could have survived such a quake. The homes would be shaken apart.
At this point my friends haven’t yet emailed a damage assessment.
One of the tribes most affected have embraced Christianity years ago. But until recently their language had not had a translation of Scripture. Praise the Lord on March 30, the New Testament was dedicated and it was received with much joy and celebration. I was at the dedication ceremony.
My heart goes out to my brothers and sisters in Christ.

I was on another site getting freaked out by the whole Obama’s grandfather looked so much like Gus Grissom stuff. Wild.
I believe it's based almost entirely on location and time. If there's another seismic event in the same location after an earthquake within a reasonable period of time (which could be months), then it's labeled an "aftershock". If you had a larger seismic event than a previous earthquake, that previous earthquake could then be labeled a "foreshock".
So for instance, you could have a 8.2 earthquake, and a month later have a 7.9 earthquake in the reasonable proximity of the first (and on the same fault line), and that second large quake would still be technically described as an aftershock.
3 killed, according to the latest update. ....a mind-bogglingly low number.
I read Jakarta, Indonesia and my thoughts went immediately to Krakatoa. I didn’t realize the quakes actually happened off the northern coast of Papua. Yep that would be way, way East.
Technically speaking there is no difference. An earthquake is an earthquake. “Aftershock” is a man-made definition used to categorize earthquakes that occur within a certain a timeframe and location.
