Sheriff Joe Arpaio: I'll Enforce Arizona's Immigration Law

I heard a funny, and misleading, statistic cited in today's ABC radio reporting about the situation in Arizona. The reporter said that twice as many whites as non-whites in Arizona supported the law. So I looked for the racial breakdown of Arizona. There are about 4,700,000 whites and about 1,120,000 Hispanic/Latinos. Now I already know that a majority of Hispanic/Latinos describe themselves as white. Everyone else, Asian, black, etc. constitutes a little less than half a million. Since there are three times as many whites as everyone else combined, including Latinos, the fact that there is a 2:1 support of the law white versus non-white means a couple of things: 1. there is a substantial percentage of the non-white population that supports the law or 2. if one half of the non-white population, including Latinos, (800,000) supports the law and twice as many whites support the law than non-white, then only 1,600,000 whites or about 1/3 of the white population supports the law.

The guy's statistic sounds like its saying that whites are a lot more supportive of the law than non-whites (or twice as racist); however, for there to be twice as many white supporters of the law as non-whites, the percentage of the white population that doesn't support it must be greater than the percentage of the non-white population that does not. If 100% of the non-white population (including Hispanic/Latinos) supported the law (~1,600,000), then 3,200,000 or 68% of the white population would support the law. Furthermore, at any point, a 2:1 support, white versus non-white, means that a relatively smaller proportion of the white population supports the law than the non-white population. This means that as a percentage of the racial group, there is a greater percentage of the non-white population that supports the law than the white population.
