Call me a cynic, but seeing Hawking on the programs sitting there like some mummy and profound lectures emanating from some computer generated voice, is pretty much science fiction in itself, with a major emphasis on FICTION. For someone that has to spell out each word by looking at the letters, he sure seems fast.
I say this is no more than bovine scat from someone other than just Hawking wishing to deceive people.

One way or the other the planet will no longer be able to sustain us, and if we havent gotten a sustainable population off the rock by then everything else weve ever done becomes pointless. Yours is the first reply on this thread that makes sense.

“Mom, can I have my own planet?”
“No fair, Bobby always gets his own planet and I have to share a planet with loser over here.”
“Sarah, don’t call your sister a loser, besides, your plant is way bigger than Bobby’s planet.”

hawkins beliefs are based on the theory that there will be a World War pitting Christians against Muslims , with both sides using nuclear weapons. Hawkins has no faith in our leaders stopping the muslims from attaining nuclear weapons and using them against us.

Its not time to ABANDON Earth but it is long past time to put colonies on the other planets if only for species survival. Europa alone could house a huge number of people quite comfortably. Not just other plants. We could construct viable, large habitats using material from the asteroid belt. Make a cylinder about a mile in diameter, spin it for gravity, and you could have a viable internal ecology that supports millions.

I had not heard that. It makes sense and seems to be playing out in real life.

“All of our eggs are in one basket just waiting for something to come along and smash all of them.”
.
All of our eggs are in the only ‘basket’ that exists WRT ability to support human life.
That won’t stop the dreamers from dreaming, but the productive will of course be called ‘luddites’ by the unproductive that seek to change the rules rather than produce.

Thanks. That sentence is pretty much my religious doctrine. We’ve done a lot of neat stuff as a species, but all those eggs are in one basket that we know will someday be broken.

I think too much narcotic is being added to Hawking’s medications... That and he is reading too many science fiction novels and believing them as fact...
Then again, one doesn’t find many people as atheistic in his beliefs as Hawking. Boy is he in for a big surprise whenever medical science can’t keep him “alive” any longer....

Gee, I hope the Russians and the Chinese are working on the escape ships, and will take us for passengers.
NASA sure isn’t going to save us, what with being re-tasked to doing ‘muslim outreach’
To: editor-surveyor
And then the next asteroid hits and all your “productivity” goes poof. The productive are trying to get us off the rock that we know with absolute certainty will break at some point eventually.

My word, I thought this chap was dead.
But while we’re on the topic, how about “Pluto,” the former planet?
