We are too busy working on our mandated Muslim Outreach Program to spend any time working on technologies to achieve your goal.
Hey, we can accomplish both goals at the same time. We gather up all moose-limbs, put them on a space ship and send them to Mars.
There, they can create their own ideallic Mecca. Hell, they're used to dust and sand anyway, and we'll improve the way they think about themselves.
However, in all seriousness, he is correct. All it's going to take is for Yellowstone to blow. A super volcano of that size would stand a good chance of wiping out most of humanity due to starvation.
Apparently, in our distant past, the eruption of Toba almost wiped out humanity. Prior to that event, there was a great variety in mitochondrial DNA. Afterwards, the mitochondrial DNA had dwindled to a small group.

Dr. Smith said” due to global warming, all of the Earth’s water will evaporate...
Sorry, Dr. Smith, water does not leave the earth’s atmosphere. It does not evaporate into space.

Dr. Smith??? Dr. Zachary Smith???
To: SonOfDarkSkies
If that doesn't drive us off, University of Sussex astrophysicist Dr. Robert Smith said global warming may reach a point "where all of Earth's water will simply evaporate."There's some controversy regarding Hawking's credentials. True or not, it doesn't help his cause to be seen with crackpots like this Dr. Smith.

‘Abandon Earth’? Where did he say that? It’s in our DNA to seek out every viable alternative to sustain human life and it is perfectly natural and reasonable to seek to leave the planet which has shown to be vulnerable to mass extinction events from time to time, even before we gained the ability to inflict them on ourselves. First, we should develop some DNA bank in orbit that could be maintained in the event of catastrophe. Then we should seek asteroids or moons suitable for outposts. That is doable within a century or two, and who knows what could become possible? Either way, our particles will remain to become something somewhere, but it just doesn’t seem like it will feel the same.....

Nope, space is gonna get you too. Radiation will get you one way or the other. We have no ability to terraform or make atmospheres in reasonable time periods. The small amounts of people that might be able to be there are not genetically diverse enough, they will be in survival mode not have time for reproduction.
This of course is the secular view to mankind’s survival. Won’t get you anywhere. Too many things can’t go wrong, too many critical paths where there will be one or more that break and you’re screwed.
