I’m packing my bags.
I’m deadly certain that Dr. Hawking has no real conception about what’s about to happen. It will push back all aspects of our so called understanding of the cosmos to the days when Jesus walked among us as a man. The tethers, which once held mankind captive here on Earth will be rendered and held in twain.
Send this one man freak show on a one-way trip to the galaxy of his choice.
Put a Wal-Mart on Mars and the people will follow! Now that’s what you call ‘out-sourcing’!
Stephen has been watching too much History Channel.
Poor Stephen Hawking— wouldn’t he much prefer an ‘out of crippled body experience’ instead? Seriously!
i WONDER if he’s been tasked by these guys

with setting the stage for the looming UFO/ET deception . . .
and the massive fear mongering . . .
and the massive depopulation events . . .
etc. etc. etc.
Once that's over with, those of us remaining will be just fine.
RAPTURE NOW!!!
“Where does he say we should abandon the earth? Bad headline.”
Agreed. How does someone take the recommendation to avoid the possibility of extinction by having human colonies on other worlds and change it to “abandon” Earth?
Lead the way, Dr. Hawking.
I always hear of leaving the Earth so mankind can escape a killer asteroid hit or a killer volcano eruption. What? Is Earth the only planet that is vulnerable to these scenarios?
It would be a bummer to finally establish a foothold on another habitable planet only to have said planet swatted by a planet killer chunk of space rock.
Sounds more like “make some back-ups.”
Which makes sense...
Your idea is not new. Read Atlas Shrugged if you haven’t already.
I’m surprised at several of the responses here.
Hawking is looking at events like Chixulub, Manson, Chesapeake, and the Yellowstone Volcano and he sees that such an event could wipe us out.
Then there is war, nuclear, biological, whatever.
He sees a way to ensure against this, by setting up shop somewhere other than Earth, what’s wrong with that? Despite the title, he is not advocating abandoning Earth, just moving beyond in terms of our capabilities.
Maybe Hawking’s statement, though delivered by a man, reflects a higher will. Could it be that God does not wish to have us stuck here on one tiny planet, when He created such a huge universe (and is showing us the tools to explore it as well)?
I’m sorry, but from everything I have read over the years, physicists do not make good philosophers; they far, far to frequently see the efforts of the human race producing a glass half empty instead of a glass half full. It is no wonder religious people often think of them as among those referred to as: “oh ye of little faith”.
Oh sure, go screw up some other planet.
That’s why our supposed leaders should go first to plan our arrival and welcome party...hehe
Anyone who has not read Rand in this time of Obama needs to get a copy of "AS" ASAP!
I was on an amphibious attack ship (USS Renville-APA 227)steaming south of Cuba preparing to invade. This was October of 1962.
