OK, but maybe you ought to inform the scientists since you know all about it. Geez.

The most likely explanation is that it's an impact crater, although given the length of the scar, it would have to have been formed by something striking the surface of Mars at an angle of less than five degrees, possibly bouncing back off the surface.
Maybe it was several objects traveling very close together.

Uh....a volcanic crater. Not to be rude but, you might want to take your own advice Uh...not to be rude but YOU might want to read the article, the idiot scientists in question have already discarded the possibility of it being a volcanic crater.

Looks to me like multiple meteor strikes; at least three. The one to the Southeast is pretty clear. The next one to the Northwest is almost centered on the second newer and smaller crater and the third one to the Northeast is also almost centered on the crater at it's center.
There could be a fourth at the very end of the Northeast section, but we'd need a more overhead shot to tell.
I wonder if those newer craters are volcanic? Created by the meteors punching through into the Mars’s mantle.

You solved the mystery. Had to be Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, or Joe DiMaggio.
Completely plausible to me. Now all we have is Pujols.
