How do you pronounce this fault? Is it MAD rid or MA drid?

That would be nice. I live a couple hundred miles away, but the latest map indicates that an 8.1 at New Madrid would feel like a 6.8 here in Elizabethtown (E-Town). After seeing what 6.8’s have done out in California, I’ll pass on that.

Very scary. I think this could happen (foreign “peacekeepers”) with this president.

Read the whole series. Start with Enemies Foreign and Domestic, then Domestic Enemies the Reconquista, then this last one Foreign Enemies and Traitors. The last book has a president who could be likened to the Wun.

It's not the 3.0 they are worried about. The 6.7 California 1994 quake was a baby compared to the same quake in the New Madrid area.

The fault line is called ‘New Madrid’ as in MAYdrid, I believe.

I knew there’d been some activity recently. Opposite side of the state from me though.

The last time the new Madrid fault slipped in the early 1800s, it would have been catastrophic, except that the area was not developed and not heavily populated. However, the quake was felt along the East coast and rang church bells in Philadelphia. It’s a major fault line.

I’m pretty sure it’s MAYdrid, but I’m open to correction on that one.

The Mississippi River was choked with Sleepers(water logged trees on the bottom) coming up.

from the last big quake there are reports of the Mississippi flowing backward (north) likely caused when the fault dropped the ground and the water rushed back to fill the void

.

About ten or twelve years ago there was a tremor felt in the KC area. After a day or two it was identified as the result of a collapsing sinkhole, but before that news came out a friend of mine ran out and got earthquake insurance on his home. It ran him like $50 for a year so even insurance companies don't consider the New Madrid fault to be much of a risk.

I’ve heard it pronounced both ways...although folks around here call it the New MADrid fault.

Wow! This is interesting...

I honestly hope people are making preparations for emergency situations. Having water on hand is the most important.

Yes I hope people are preparing too I’ve been watching it for awhile and noticed the frequency and intensity increasing and noted that they had begun disaster preparedness training sending National Guard units to train just within the past few months and it never hurts to be prepared for disaster anyway in my opinion.

“I’ve been watching it for awhile and noticed the frequency and intensity increasing...”

I have also been watching this for awhile and noticed the same. I have also been praying for God’s mercy...and that we will be sufficiently prepared to help others if the need arises.

WISE advice: “...it never hurts to be prepared for disaster anyway in my opinion.”

A quake at New Madrid acts differently than any in CA. The land is much harder, and less pliable. As a result, it takes much less of an earthquake to produce damage than it does in CA, given the same building codes.

That is why a New Madrid quake was felt in Boston, while the 1989 CA quake didn't come close to the area affected.

That being said, you are correct--a 3.0 is pretty small.
