I lived in Anchorage and Eagle River for 8 years. I probably would have freaked if I’d experienced a major earthquake. I lived on the fairly gently sloped side of a mountain, though, so I think we’d have fared pretty well. Two things I never want to face: a tornado and a big earthquake.

The riveting part for me was the way survivors all described the storm in the same way that grandad did. I don't remember so much in the book about picking up the bodies, I am sure it was mentioned. Issac was the weather forecaster who screwed up and completely underestimated what was about to happen. I felt bad for him.

I remember it was '89 because the big news while we were there was Tiananmen Square. I was a rider too, came along to do underway training with the QMs in weather observation and synoptic encoding and of course pick up a good liberty port. I didn't have to stand watches but I did volunteer to help with the sea detail since it was so long. I'm pretty sure the LST was Racine.

I don’t remember who all was there, but I was stationed on the CGC Resolute in Astoria. I don’t recall if it was 89 or not, but one year we were sitting there dockside, in civvies getting ready to bug out on liberty when a DDG (I don’t recall which one) comes scooting up the river headed for the Rose fest. There we were on the foc’sle... standing around, when somebody got the bright idea, just for s#!ts and giggles, to man up the 3” gun... which we did... and trained it on the DDG, and slowly tracked it as it approached.

Big mistake. The DDG replied to our s#!ts and giggles... suddenly a big blue (inert, training) missile comes shooting up into their forward launcher... the launcher then spins around and locks right square on us, and tracked, as they cruised on by.

We immediately conceded the point— and pointed the gun up and brought it back to center. Apparently word got back to the Captain... he wasn’t amused. :-)

Ha. I don't believe it.

Here is a photo of the ship I drove up the Columbia River in 1966... I'm surprised I remembered her name. It's an old WW2 Liberty Ship.
