I find it hard to believe anything the size of a comet could cause a quake unless it hit us.
But I remember when it was first discovered, they were saying that based on what they were seeing then, and the orbital projections, that this could be one of the most spectacular naked-eye comets ever seen.
Then, all a sudden like, it just fell off the map.

LOL! You got me. I'm rarely bored enough to listen to most American shortwave. I'd rather listen to the rag-chewers down on 1.6Mhz, where I could participate, if only I had another 3 acres for antenna.
And the novices up on 40 meters always need someone to practice with, plodding along at 8WPM.

Yep, I learned my lesson during Y2K, On worrying about future predictions :)
Its a shame it fell apart. I was thinking back when my Wife and I went outside at 4:00 AM to see Hale Bopp. It was an amazing site.

Comet Elenin Self-Destructs LOL, in your dreams.
It didn't self-destruct - it turned.
The keys to its peak visibility were the closeness it would eventually have to ... Earth in mid-October (0.23 a.u.).
LOL, in your nightmares.
It's protected by a force field.

Scientists used the new Earth Bound Comet Clobberator to break up the comet in a recent test.
This is a secret so don’t tell anyone, O.K.?

Are you sure that’s not some alien ship? I’ve never seen a comet that was three sided and bright red. Tetra...what?
I did see a Comet shaped like a pancake but a eighteen wheeler had run over it and it was hard to tell what color it was.

Now I don't want to sound like some tin-foil hat looney tunes whack job, but THERE IS SOMETHING DAMN WEIRD about all this Elenin stuff!!!
Yeah, the giant planet-sized spaceship that is Elenin has just been booting up its cloaking device.

There is much more to this story than they are telling us. There are people in a plain looking building near McLean Virginia that definitely know what is going on.
I wish I could say more

I threw an ice cube in my hot tub today, and it just busted up like some alien race shot it. Then it disappeared!
Weird stuff.

But no doubt if its breaking apart and spreading out, that increases the chance it might hit something important. Hope its not my backside!!! I hope it hits my neighbor's house. That guy always plays his radio too loud.

“LOL, in your dreams.
It didn’t self-destruct - it turned.”
Actually, the “turn” is exactly what it should have done; it’s due to STEREO-B’s perspective of the comet, it didn’t literally “turn.”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwuVyAzm3Q8
As for the current dimming and diffusion of the apparent nucleus, I encourage you to look at the raw fits image files from STEREO’s SECCHI image database, not the processed web versions. The latter go through a ton of processing, which destroys your ability to make photometry measurements of any object in the field of view. If you look at the raw originals it was much brighter just a few weeks ago compared to now (though it’s definitely on the low end of the histogram both then and now).
Due to HI-1’s wide field of view, 20 degrees wide, 113.31 arcseconds per pixel (almost 2 arcminutes), it is not possible to notice the elongation of the apparent nucleus seen in ground images taken with long focal length telescopes.

Thanks djf.
I guess all those pseudoscientific bloggers who predicted planet-altering encounters with a cosmic visitor bright enough to be seen in broad daylight will just have to find something else to worry about.
