The Gamburtsevs are important because they are thought to be the location where the ice sheet we know today initiated its march across Antarctica. Unravelling the mountains' history will therefore inform climate studies...
Something ought to have done that long before now.
Antarctica got its ice less than three million years ago, and IMV it's not a coincidence that the Eltanin impact crater was formed around two million.
