Isn’t (or wasn’t) Chelyabinsk the center of Russias’ famed/feared bio-weapons labs?

There is an enormous amount of important military stuff of all kinds near Chelyabinsk.

Sad but true. Frankly, a potential city-killing meteorite ranks a good deal higher on the "importance" scale than an ill-fated voyage aboard the USS Craptanic. Or at least, it should.

I’m surprised this isn’t bigger news than it is...

When the story first broke last night (north America time), the moderators quickly put it in Chat/Bloggers, then moved it back to News after a few complaints.

BECAREFUL!!! it could be the BLOB!!! This is how it all started.

Beware of the blob, it creeps
And leaps and glides and slides
Across the floor
Right through the door
And all around the wall
A splotch, a blotch
Be careful of the blob

Here in Europe, it is big news. The Czech TV commentators referred to it as “once in a lifetime” event, and had good coverage of it, even referencing the 1908 Tunguska Event as well. They had about a solid 20 minute-long piece on the incident, and the Czech astronomers they interviewed basically asserted that Chelyabinsk “dodged a bullet” and that it could have been infinitely worse.

I’m surprised this isn’t bigger news than it is. Something like this happens only once in a lifetime.

To those capable of critical thought it is.

This event was historical given the fact it was another object which went totally undetected.

Compound this by the fact within approximately 20 hours later, a near miss from asteroid large enough to completely level the Dallas area with an impact so great it would rain down house sized debris 75 miles away..It just missed us.

Another reason why we here watch very little television. I can't bear watching the 30 year old CNN/FOX fashion models talking to the audience like they're all 7 year olds.

Yes. Russian TV (English) was discussing this early this morning.

When I first this on the morning news, I was more focused on the visuals then the audio (working on a first cup of coffee at the time) and I thought, “Hey, wow....great CGI”. Then as I started focusing on what the Czech newsreaders were saying, then it dawned on me what had taken place and just how important this news story really was.

When I heard (and later read) that this object was essentially a sucker-punch from outer space, well, I was pretty stunned.

I’m still waiting to hear back from a teaching colleague in Chelyabinsk. I sent her an e-mail earlier today. She’s a teacher at a secondary school there.

My husband was a first grader in SC in the early 60’s and was told to get under the desk, do not look at the light. If strange people came in, took away the teacher and the flag, just do what the replacement teacher said. Funny thing, he lived in the center of a 100 mile diameter area that included Charleston nuclear sub base, the Atomic Energy Commission Savannah River site (where they made the bombs), Fort Jackson military training base, Shaw airforce base (Shaw took the photos of Cuba), and McEntire national guard base. He found out years later that the Russian bombs were so inaccurate that they sent numerous ones at each target. He still wonders where the strange people and the new teacher would have come from! LOL

The event was so loud, those people in buildings or homes who did not see it, said they thought it was a massive earthquake.
There actually was an earthquake in Russia yesterday, but evidently not massive. http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/Quakes/usc000f76f.php

Astronomers chronically downplay the hazard of meteor and comet impact on Earth for one simple reason. Our only defense against them at present are the world’s nuclear ICBM arsenals and liberal academia bleeds from its eyes and ears at any justification for the nuclear arms race to be considered as a savant for humanity. Google “Richard Firestone” plus “Younger Dryas Event”

The shock wave blew in an estimated 100,000 square meters (more than 1 million square feet) of glass, according to city officials, who said 3,000 buildings in the city were damaged. At one zinc factory, part of the roof collapsed.

We heard reports the shock/pressure wave swayed larger buildings.

So it was the top story on the CNN website for a while, but it’s been replaced by “Obama focuses on guns in Chicago” and is now listed below “Pistorius weeps in court” in World News.
