Israel needs to do what they think they need to do. I’m a strong believer in national sovereignty for national interests.

That said I’m also a believer that the USA and our government needs to put the USA first and only. I’m weary of being made accountable to other countries, and handing other countries money we don’t have.

We need to put the USA first and rebuild America and cut our gravy train to the entire Middle East

The shielding would depend on the radiation involved. If the isotope’s decay does not have much in the gamma, but more in the alpha and beta, the shielding requirement is comparatively reduced. This is especially the case for an alpha emitter, which can be shield with Saran Wrap. Ingesting alpha emitting material though is quite nasty. An example is the polonium tea served to a Russian dissident.

Orders of magnitude make a difference. So does the inverse square law.

A covert but exposed _intact_ cesium source would be much more dangerous than a powered version of the same cesium spread over a large area.

I’m not too sure about that.

Look at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Both recovered within a few years.

In fact, if you want to see a stark contrast, look at today’s Nagasaki compared with right after the fissile bombing in 1945.

Better yet, look at today’s Nagasaki compared with today’s Detroit.

The Japanese bombs were air bursts. There was nothing to get the ground dirty. If one wants to do real damage with a dirty bomb one needs only to wrap a load of cobalt 60 pellets from old xray machines around a conventional explosive. Those pellets will have a fatal bite for upwards of 30,000 years. I wrote decades ago when I realized that medical outfits were being careless with older machines. It’s notable that the muzzies haven’t yet been able to get their hands on the stuff. If they had they would have used it by now.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki were the recipients of direct nuclear detonations of first generation devices.

Since then, the science, engineering and machining, and refining of various radioactive metals, has produced a wide range of those metals that could be used for dirty bombs.

Japanese constructions of wooden structures cannot compare with Western architecture.

Same strategy used against South Africa? Weird coincidence.

[Much better bang for your buck with conventional explosives. Don’t get me wrong it will make a big mess but that is about it.]

If such a device were detonated in New York’s financial district—New York Stock Exchange, Federal Reserve Bank of New York, Wall Street, etc.—it could cause a big, negative ripple before the site was cleaned up and confidence restored. The weapon could be delivered in a large truck.

the difference is that Israel is a whole lot stronger today than RSA was back then.... stronger in all senses...including defensive “goodies” that you never, ever see even hinted about in the media.....
also Israel has seen what happened to RSA since the ‘whites’ there abdicated their country...
That lesson has been very well learned.

there is a connection, however, in that in the very early years Israel was able to share some expertise with RSA and RSA was able to assist with a safe testing range for some of the very simplest, most primitive “goodies”....the stuff we do hear a bit about nowadays in the media...
history being strange that way, ha!
