I commend you to the first Navy report about the Fitzgerald.
It’s a testimony to the heroism and TRAINING of the crew at a time of disaster.
They didn’t panic (that’s TRAINING). They acted professionally did there duties, saved lives of their fellow sailors.
We can ALWAYS use more “training”, but don’t accept for one minute that our servicemen are UNTRAINED. That is BULL$HIT!
“servicemen” is a gender neutral term. It implies both sexes. It is not necessary to add “servicewomen”. It is a form of the word “man”. As in HU “MAN”. not a “male”. Last time I looked, women were also “HUMANS”. (except Hillary, Pelosy, & Waters), but then again, are they women? I digress....
This “politically correct” bastardization of our language has to STOP!
Look at where it has lead us! Terms like him or her are being removed from the lexicon. No one knows which bathroom to use or WHO is in there with you.
It all started with the objection by the left to fire man, police man, and flag man. AND WE WENT RIGHT ALONG WITH IT! (well y’all did).
Now the left is out to DESTROY our military in another way by denigrating them as being untrained buffoons. And many are just eating it up. Sad, really.
Don’t get me started on “Confederate” statues.
As the old saw- you can[t fight the war with the army you want; you fight the war with the army you have. The Navy and all the military have suffered from two 8 year periods of purge and active reduction in the last 24 years. It cannot be refurbished in a short time. In the meantime we have to go with what we have left and make it suffice.
What I read after it happened it was the freighter that turned. There are some allegations supported by videos that other nations’ militaries have been doing practice runs of container ships turning to collide with other ships as a form of attack.
For 8 years the experienced and capable officers of the military were systematically . This happens with every Democrat administration. Leftists cannot shake their dread of the military and always move to neutralize it. Leftists know they are illegitimate in Western civilization and fear that the military, always a conservative bastion of society, will move against them and depose them when they rule. After 7 decades of Communism the army in the Soviet Union showed these fears to be accurate.
As a plumber, I can tell you that urinals are FILTHY, unsanitary, unnecessary fixtures.
NO ONE flushes them. Even if they do, the flushing mechanism is usually inadequate.
They usually require screens and urinal cakes
“Urinal deodorizer blocks (also called urinal cakes, para blocks, urinal mints, urinal pucks, urinal peons (pee-ons), urinal biscuits, urinal cookies, or urinal donuts) are the small disinfectant blocks found in urinals.”
Urinal cakes are made of: Paradichlorobenzene, a chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbon compound used as a fumigant insecticide and repellant. (POISON).
The concentrated urine (no flushing) and the chemicals in urinal cakes, eat right through metal pipes.
GOOD RIDDANCE TO URINALS, PERIOD!
I agree with you. Served 86-92. 17 families better start asking these questions on any interview they can snag. Problem? No one is covering it.
Can we please drop this ramming crap? Unless it’s dead in the water, no Navy ship can be deliberately rammed by a freakin’ freighter.
“””What I read after it happened it was the freighter that turned. There are some allegations supported by videos that other nations militaries have been doing practice runs of container ships turning to collide with other ships as a form of attack.”””
Of course, the folks making the allegations about merchant ships attacking our Navy ships fail to mention that the tanker Alnic MC was traveling at 9.2 knots when it supposedly attacked a USN destroyer capable of literally turning on a dime at 30 plus knots.
Ping to read the rest of that later. :)
My ADA battalion went from C-3 to C-1 during my last two years in Germany, thanks to a Battalion Commander that demanded imagination and independence from his officers and NCOs. He chewed me out plenty, but it was never personal...I was a 1LT running his supply operations for a battalion spread out at 3 air bases.
One of the best jobs I ever had. I worked for him for another eighteen months at Fort Bliss.
DLG-34 was my home from ‘67 to ‘70.
Mine was Yarnell DLG-17 starting with pre-comm in Bath, Maine through homeporting in Newport. I left for B school in late ‘68 or early ‘69 and only saw the Caribbean on her.
We had a Sonar Tech transfer in from the Yarnell. He always referred to it as the “Harry D.”
Merrill, I think.
Since the ship’s name was Harry E. Yarnell, our ballcaps said HEY and our (very unofficial) nickname for her was the “Hairy Urinal”. :=)

Well, I was close. It’s been fifty years. :)

Amen!
Nor do the "ramming conspiracists" mention the unequivocal physical evidence that the Fitzgerald was traveling at a considerably faster speed than the Crystal, was overtaking Crystal from behind, and was on Crystal's port side, thus, Crystal -- by its position -- had the right-of way.
Fitzgerald should have crossed behind Crystal.
Ever see someone in the left lane of a freeway race across lanes of traffic -- and cut off other drivers -- to get to an exit on the right? Fitz pulled the same stupid stunt -- and the vessel on the right couldn't stop in time..
If there was a "ramming", Fitzgerald did it.
Pretty basic stuff, actually...
“If the Yokosuka ships are lacking certifications, then what is the situation at the other Navy bases (San Diego, Pearl Harbor, Norfolk, etc)?”
Yokosuka is the tip of the spear, with limited facilities and capabilities. The stateside bases you name are more capable.
“””Yokosuka is the tip of the spear, with limited facilities and capabilities. The stateside bases you name are more capable.”””
The marine traffic in/out of San Diego and Pearl Harbor is nothing compared to the traffic at Yokohama and Singapore.
If the crews at San Diego and Pearl Harbor are more capable at steering a ship, then why are they not steering the ships based at Yokosuka?
Navy leadership has created a mess and young men have died because of their poor leadership.
My God, our once elite military is second rate. What a shame.
