“So far we are looking at Flagstaff”

I’m in the same boat. Grew up in Brea, North Orange County. CA. But I have been living for the last 25 years in Chino CA about 15 miles outside of Orange County. Mostly nice Middle Class town with about a 55/45 split left to right political alignment. So we are not over whelmed by nuts.

I have only been through Flagstaff once, 30 years ago, and the impression is still present on my mind for a retirement location. The cost of living is high by Arizona standards but still better than So Cal. It is a four season community so the winters will be cold but not Montana cold. The big issue for us that we want to do some overseas traveling so flights are problematic with long car drives to Phoenix which still is a minor hub local requiring more transfer’s to get to Europe and beyond.
