It is not clear why he returned to the bombed area after releasing his bombs.

Battle damage assessment?

Proper BDA is done by a photo plane coming by AFTER the bomb smoke and dust is cleared away, by a higher speed reconnaissance plane at low level coming in AFTER the strike from a different direction at an “unpredictable” time.

The slower strike planes are hindered by no camera's, higher drag of their external bomb racks, slower flight speed of the strike aircraft (compared to the F-102 Voodoo fighters or Navy recon planes for example), and because the gunners are already at their posts and are tracking the attack planes if they circle back or come in twice.

Also, a strike bomber who “missed” the first time will likely fly back over the same target and “miss” again - because he would be using the same visual clues and same aiming points to try to look at the original target! He would see the bomb blast of course - he's looking at the place where he put his own bombs, right? That's why they required independent photo evaluation by a different plane briefed on the target and flying independently. Doesn't prevent errors of course, but deliberately resets the table to reduce them from being repeated by the same guy who has no equipment, and who is violently acting to reinforce his original error by justifying his hits.

That's why the umpire calls balls and strikes. Not the pitcher, not the hitter.

Forrestal put into Cubi Point in the Philippines to be patched before returning to the United States, where she was drydocked for eight months of repairs.

The fire left 134 men dead[30] and 161 more injured.[2] It was the worst loss of a life on a U.S. Navy ship since World War II.[20] Of the 73 aircraft aboard the carrier, 21 were destroyed and 40 were damaged.[31]

Twenty-one aircraft were stricken from naval inventory: seven F-4B Phantom IIs (BuNos 153046, 153054, 153060, 153061, 153066, 153069 and 153912); eleven A-4E Skyhawks (149996, 150064, 150068, 150084, 150115, 150118, 150129, 152018, 152024, 152036 and 152040); and three RA-5C Vigilantes (148932, 149284 and 149305).[1]

There are people who argue McCain was not specifically responsible for the Forestall fire - and the flight evidence supports some of their claims. However, he DID credibly “wet start” (blow live flames across the deck) other times before that specific fire as an attention-getter to shock his fellow fliers on the deck. Because of his history and his reputation for these fires, John McCain WAS immediately transferred off the Forestall within hours of the fire by his dad’s orders to avoid the crew, even before many of the injured crew.

Interesting... sounds like he had the 'look at me - look at me' thing going most of his life...

He shut off his engines, opened the cockpit, and in his haste to exit the aircraft to chew someone out about his having to “ wait”, he hit the button that released his live bombs onto the deck of the Forrestal.

That is not what happened.

McLame was parked on his deck spot, not waiting in line. A rocket from an F-4 on deck fired due to stray voltage (malfunction) and that rocket hit one or two other aircraft, Knocked a fuel tank loose which caught fire and touched off plane munitions.

The guy was a douche but he didn't cause the Forrestal fire. Anymore than the other pilots who were sitting in their planes.
