It was my first experience with "partisan" politics.
Even at that age, I immediately discerned that the writers (of the show) intended to to portray Archie Bunker as the bad guy who was intolerant and narrow minded and that Mike (Meathead) was intended to be the voice of reason - the "progressive" level-headed liberal who was to set the bigoted Archie Bunker straight.
I found the "Meathead" character extremely annoying right from the start and I also realized that it seemed to be Archie Bunker who was the only person in the house who was working everyday and getting the bills paid.
Also, the two main woman characters (Edith and Gloria) were portrayed as empty headed ditzes. Ironic that the TV show Norman Lear intended to use as a vehicle to enlighten America to liberal values was not only sexist but ended up making a folk hero of Archie Bunker.
I don't call them "progressives" (except in quotation marks to mock the fact they call themselves "progressives"), since their agenda does not bring progress. Their ideas, if implemented, are REGRESSIVE, not "progressive"
Leftists calling themselves "progressive" is even worse than them calling themselves "liberals", IMO. They definitely seem to prefer referring to themselves as "progressives" moreso than "liberals", so why would we want to help?
I won't use the term "blue state" to refer to DemocRAT infested areas either, for the same reasons.

I don’t personally mind calling them “progressives” because they are definitely “progressing” towards their Godless, totalitarian goals. We give the connotation of “good” to the word “progress,” but I submit that it aint necessarily so.
Seriously. Leftist love booze and drugs and do want it all pretty available. They advertise sexiness in their clothing and piercings and whatever.
So what would they have kids do at parties? Read poetry and video each other filling out sexual agreement forms?

MASH was similar and ran at the same time All in the Family ran. It was a reasonably even-handed (though Left-leaning) show in its early seasons but slowly evolved into The Alan Alda Show by its end. Every time a character fell out of the show, the show lurched further Left-ward. It was funny at the beginning, but increasingly Alda would just issue unfunny rants with a laugh-track accompaniment. His foils were also increasingly buffoonish and transparent straw-men.
In the first place we are not dealing with classic liberals or even '60s hippy liberals. We are dealing with neo-Bolsheviks.They have weaponized themselves.
Man-buns, the affectation of young urban liberals. I would be surly as well if I wore one.
Of course, at my age I am more a candidate for a "hair farm" which is just as ridiculous and also an affectation of liberal metrosexuals.
