The political term “Left” began shortly before the French Revolution, encompassing pretty much the same as today’s Left.

A key characteristic of the movement was a propensity of extremists to kill off other Leftist leaders for being too centrist, not being extremist enough. This pattern would repeat numerous times; just when you thought things couldn’t get more extreme, an even more extreme group would emerge and slaughter their way to power. Eventually just being not exactly in line with Robespierre would get you beheaded - so much for “liberty, equality, fraternity”.

Today’s Leftists are now on the same path. The extremism of Hillary, Pelosi, etc is looking downright centrist compared to Bernie, OC, etc - who are, unsurprising given history, starting out by eliminating their immediate competitors. Look to OC & friends being taken down in a few years by others who think they’re not extreme enough.

I would caution against taking Ms Ocasio-Cortez too lightly.

Back in 2004 some lightweight former community organizer spoke at the DNC convention. Many scoffed at the though of this loser becoming anything more than a state senator.

In mid-2015, many people thought Trump's candidacy was a joke...Jeb! was a shoe-in.

Now, I'm not arguing that she's a powerhouse orator or that she will easily topple Pelosi.

But remember that Trump won by about 60,000 votes, i.e. The margin of victory collectively in MI, WI, and PA. And many Dems won by questionably small margins in 2018. Finally, the DNC has the media and Antifa working for them. It may not require a tsunami of public support for this freshman to become a horror for Normal People.
