Because:
1. Nobody walks or rides bikes to school anymore
2. No one plays hard recess anymore
3. After school kids sit and play with their phones instead of each other

My first bike was a red Typhoon, handed down from my oldest brother after he got a 10-speed. Rode that thing everywhere. I got a speedometer for Christmas once; it went to 50 mph and there were some hills where I could peg it. Helmets? Not even dreamed of. Still alive some 50 years later, not sure how.

Bingo!

Most schools have eliminated daily PE to save $ and cut back on recess. Kids sit all day and don't exercise. If some boy starts to work off their excess energy, they drug him.

School lunches in my day in the ‘60s in CALIFORNIA was hot dog day on Thursday. Period! 8 ounces of milk was available daily for a nickel. Were my parents oddballs providing their four sons their own lunches?

Sometimes we had a morning snack we could buy and sometimes it was afternoon. I think the afternoon times were usually in the hot part of the year. The only places in the school that had air conditioning were the Principal’s office, the library, and the teachers’ lounge.

I went to a small county school in a close knit community where grandmas, moms, and daughters had attended the same elementary, junior and senior high schools. Had they not changed that school to a middle school and made the graduating class go to another school over 10+ miles away, there would have been less than 90 in my graduating class.

I started elementary in 1969 and graduated when I was 17 in 1980. Great time to be a kid.

Two dogs, chips and a carton of milk for 50 cents was plenty for this sixth grader.
