Having an opponent means the media will be forced to cover Trump during the primaries. Otherwise every story would be about validating the Democrat circus tent.

That LBJ, Carter, and Bush had primary challengers were symptoms of the problems they faced getting re-elected. LBJ had much of the Democrat base mad at him over the Vietnam War, and Carter was obviously incompetent. Bush's biggest problem, apart from breaking his "read my lips" promise, was Perot. Without Perot in the race he might have won.

Weld thinks Trump's rhetoric is like Germany in 1938? I don't think there were any Jews trying to sneak into Germany illegally in 1938. Trump isn't preventing anyone from leaving the country.
