I recall a case that went down either in the late ‘50s or early ‘60s. There was a huge moonshine still run by organized crime, perhaps the Cosa Nostra, down in Louisiana or eastern Texas. It shipped the moonshine in tanker trucks to Canada where it was dyed and rebottled as popular liquor brands and sold in the US. It was raided, as I understand, and only the still operators were charged. The big guys were never publically identified.

It really depends on what you make your shine from. If it’s made from fruits or vegetables, then yes you do. If you’re making wine, the same applies. If you are making alcohol with grains, there is very little worry. Even if you don’t cast off the fore shots you won’t have dangerous levels of methanol. Now, there will be acetones and it will taste like crap-but you won’t go blind.

Of course-I’m just guessing at all of this-I have zero hands on experience. ;-)

You really have to be good friends with your moonshiner. You ARE trusting him with your life. While we are on the subject, how many people know that the US gummint PURPOSEFULLY tainted some 65,000 bottles of hooch at the beginning of Prohibition because “it was only fitting lawbreakers be’punished’”. IIRC hundreds died. No one was ever even arrested. It wasn’t even a “scandal”. Ponder on that one for a bit. They have been doing this crap to us for a LONG time.
