Too many people, mostly under 50, seem to believe that the number of friends, followers, like and shares means something.
Countless blogs seriously explain how to turn these casual social media relationships into a monetary funnel for whatever they are peddling.
In a time of lockdown & social distancing, it’s likely this particular asset class became even more valuable to the page occupier.
Then for some, this has become the only way they interact a family. I’ve watched that dynamic with folks I know....the daughters use it to grandstand emotionally against their moms. It always seem to be the daughters & the moms. Also seen this dynamic between women *friends*. How do I know, since I don’t have social media accounts? Well, this is important enough to some that they screenshot the exchanges and email them to everyone else.
In a long life, I’ve learned the value of keeping shut, especially judgements about others. Once the hurtful things and the nasty names are out there, they cannot be recalled. This is, however, not a universally accepted truth.
I doubt the social media participants are ever going to stop using it. They all should, especially as it’s used to qualify them for participating in general society, but they won’t.
