The Philippines Department of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that information from the Philippine Embassy in Beirut indicated that two seafarers from the Orient Queen died in the explosion.
The seafarers were among a group of 13 Filipino seafarers reported to be on the Orient Queen when the blast occurred. As of the latest update, 10 of 11 workers initially reported missing have been located and are now with the management of the shipping company Abu Merhi Cruises, which operates the Orient Queen.
Among those located, most suffered minor injuries while one is in critical but stable condition. One seafarer is still missing, the Department said.
Prayers up for their souls.
According to the cruise ship owner, the vessel was docked in Beirut's port. The blast seriously damaged the Orient Queen, allowing water to seep in. Attempts to quickly fix and save the ship failed and she sank in the port.
According to the Philippines Department of Foreign Affairs, the two deceased were from the Philippines.
The cruise ship is flagged in the Bahamas and is operated by Abou Merhi Cruises. Orient Queen had returned to its homeport in Beirut from a 22-day voyage.
Built in 1989, Orient Queen had a capacity to accommodate 300 guests and 153 crew members.
The explosions at the port damaged the cruise ship, which led to the seepage of water into the ship.
The BNS Bijoy navy ship has also reportedly been damaged by the explosions. In addition, a cargo ship and a livestock carrier have been damaged.
