He never really said he supported gun rights - his ads just kept pointing to his military background as if that was all Arizona gun owners needed to hear to know he was "OK" on the issue.
The NRA and McSally came in late with ads pointing out Kelly's real positions - ads that would have working in a normal election cycle, but the GOP did not adjust their usual late advertising strategy this time to account for the early mail-in ballots.
I am 76 and have lived my entire life in South Carolina minus a hitch in the Navy and one year just across the Northern border in Charlotte. I have seen the whole panorama shift, you used to hear of Republican liberals and Democrat conservatives. My father nearly had a heart attack when he saw an “I Like Ike” button on my jacket when I was a little boy. He literally ripped it off with a murderous look on his face. A relative who was the only republican in the county had put it on me. The South used to be the “Solid South” meaning the whole area voted solidly democrat and the Northeast was the home of the hated “Republican Liberals”. I have not voted for a democrat in many, many decades.
It was cheating mostly.
You see the same style thing going in in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Any older person (usually a woman) wearing a hat with a southwestern hatband, wearing a Navajo pattern coat and sporting silver and turquoise jewelry is probably from New York City.
Plus all the fauxdobe houses that are just wood frame with stucco.
Actually, I saw a lot of ads where Kelly talking about growing up hunting and how he supports the 2nd Amendment and gun ownership. But he sure won’t in the Senate!
His ads were all: “Aw shucks, I’m just a heroic astronaut and fighter pilot who wants to make America work! Son of cops, strong 2nd Amendment supporter, yada, yada...” Never once heard anything specific.
McSally? She’d have voted well if she won, but she was invisible until the last 2 weeks. Kelly ran non-stop ads for 6 months and McSally...not sure what she did. If I wasn’t a rabid conservative, I wouldn’t have known she was running at all....
Hint..just take a look at the RV parks around AZ. Look at the plate numbers.
They can stay for 180 days without moving..

Perfect analogy.
Yes, we checked out Santa Fe when we were looking for a place to retire. It seemed like a nice climate. Well, that was about the only thing about it that was attractive to us. I met a young jewelry maker, a college graduate, who informed me about the fake jewelry being sold, dyed turquoise, opals and coral, which would lose their color eventually.
