Have a good read: Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo - Capt Ted Lawson.
Throughout American electoral history, economic downturns (usually) ended poorly for the incumbent. I say usually because FDR clearly extended a depression and made it 'Great' and never paid much of a political price although he had a couple not great mid-term elections. The indelible memory of the market crash during Hoover's tenure remained a useful tool for FDR.
What will be interesting to see is if history will continue to repeat itself. Will the emerging socialist generation that is the under 25 crowd will turn on democrats when the dollar they made this week only buys $.25 next week. Inflation should do to Biden what it did to Carter. For a few reasons, I'm just much less certain that it will.
I agree there's isn't a permanent liberal governing majority...but I'm afraid that's the transition we're headed into particularly if we legalize tens of millions of illegals. South Americans have a RICH history of rewarding failure at the ballot box and I'm afraid they've brought that infirmity with them to this country.
And you're probably right, Clinton wasn't going to lose. Gas was cheap, productivity was high - driven largely by the emerging power interconnectivity of the personal computer - and unemployment was low in 1996. People were likely sated which was one reason they largely stayed away from the polls in 1996.
“You cannot invade the mainland United States. There would be a rifle behind every blade of grass.” Isoroku Yamamoto,
Yes Indeed. Just saw the movie two weeks ago. Van Johnson portrayed Capt. Lawson.
Clinton was also pragmatic, and even though kicking and screaming along the way, he did sign tax cuts and welfare reform, which at the end he described as his greatest accomplishments...which he also wanted to fix.
