Wow, sorry to hear about your classmate.

It was a tragic day in auto history when cars started to be labeled “No User Serviceable Parts.”

There are a number of sites on the interweb, I’ve noticed in the last few years, that will helpfully give instructions to people who feel that if they dump half a month’s pay on some electronic gadget, they should have at least a ghost of a chance to be able to fix it themselves. Are they offering false hope? Are they just trying to teach us all a lesson, that is, that we are never to think we can overcome mechanical problems by ourselves anymore?

“You’re too dumb to understand how this works! Now, go watch TV!”

“But....I need to get to work.”

“ Car does have a physical key, but people get use to the convenience of using their phone app to open the car. All works great until the central servers go belly up and can’t authenticate the phone app request to “Open the pod bay doors, Hal”.

“Although of course you can use a key to open the car too, the natural instinct of many Tesla drivers, who are buying one of the most high tech models in the market, is to rely on the technology.””

The problem isn’t necessarily that they were relying on their phones to use their car, it’s that the design also relied on the Internet and remote servers. It could have easily be done locally rather than going to Teslas server farm.

My mistake in saying “vehicle”, when I meant “automobile”.

But you already knew that, didn’t you? Sorry I ruined what you think was a real own. Wait, no I’m not.
