Thank you for the update, Amy. Changes in mental status are an early sign of sepsis. He may have been given pain meds prior to a bedside debridement of the wounds. Perhaps his general condition prohibits his being taken to OR for debridement (some forms of anesthesia can be cardiac depressants; the stage of his sepsis also can predispose a patient to shock). There used to be a general rule that they can give a nonspecific condition report to phone callers. However, since there have been occurrences that have put the patient in harm’s way (domestic abusers, gang members intending to “finish the job,” etc.), they might not be permitted to acknowledge that the patient is actually on the premises. Not trying to make excuses here, but these are some possibilities. Additionally, since the PTB have probably sacked a bunch of qualified caregivers who have refused to get the “vaccine,” they’re probably short-staffed and frazzled. If they know who Jim is, they’re probably very nervous. If they don’t know who he is, the direct caregivers are probably frustrated at not being able to give their best to very sick patients. The gain-of-function people have done a very thorough job of screwing things up. A nonthreatening but very persistent presence could conceivably be more effective that a litigious, threatening one in this situation. However, if they become obnoxious and overbearing, ‘tis better to light one flamethrower....
