Thats a whole infantry division worth. And 485,000 is the size of the regular army, not the recruiting target. That is around 50-60,000. 1/3 below target is a huge thing.
Please do NOT recommend joining the current military to any young people you care about. It is a woke mess and will not be repaired anytime soon.

But before WWI it wasn’t unusual for our military to be relatively small.
My daughter had planned on a military academy for years, wanted to become a field medic...last year when she saw the woke beat down and the Vax mandate, she quit the application process. She scored exceptionally well on the ASFAB and gets calls from everyone. Too bad, they are missing out on a brilliant, athletic young woman!
There is a good argument that the US is retaining far more ground-warfare equipment than it will ever need. And that the Army force structure is much larger than it should be.
To me that sounds like they're dangerously expendable for China's ambition to restore their honor from what they refer to as the century of humiliation, while surprisingly not grateful for our role in ending that humiliation. China would probably still be Japan's comfort woman if Japan hadn't attacked Pearl Harbor.

And let’s not forget dropouts with a GED can no longer get in without 15 college credits. Even for infantry. They simply will not take any GED holders without like 3 years of college.
Not to mention the wokeness, unwillingness to whip fat boys into shape, etc, their recruitment problems are of their own making with their idiotically high standards.
If they’d drop the high school diploma ONLY requirement, accept people with 35% body fat, and overlook petty misdemeanors all would be well except for the wokeness. You can even be failed out over your teeth and tattoos. It’s like they don’t WANT to meat recruiting goals.
9/11 happened when I was 15, and at 17 I had parental consent to join. I got my GED in June of 02 when I was 16, and we were invading countries and they kept out a prospective 11 bravo because of a GED.
So it’s been going on at least since then.
