Once again Putin reveals that the true cause of the war is his denial of Ukrainian national identity as a separate people and his goal is to reunify all the “historical Russians.” His complaint against NATO and the West isn’t about any fear that they will invade the Russian Federation, but that they stand in the way of his reunification of “historical Russia.”

For Putin, the break up of Russia does not refer to the current Russian Federation, but instead to “historical Russia,” i.e. the old Russian Empire.
