They did, but when Majority Leader McCarthy was elected to Speaker, they have to vote to replace him. Usually it's automatic, everyone bumps up one slot.

Steve Scalise went from Majority Whip to Majority Leader, and the Whip slot became vacant. Tom Emmer was selected to fill the Whip position.

You’ve got the sequence wrong. Gaetz decided to change his Adjournment vote and spoke to McCarthy about it. They both changed their Adjournment votes, then others started to as well. Then it didn’t pass. Then Crenshaw started talking to Gaetz. At this pointbit was obvious that some decision had been made to have the 6 vote Present which would allow McCarthy to win.

Brooks is the slated chair of the Armed Services Committee and had his little boys and girls all lined up for his committee.

Gaetz was seen to utter the word “Committee” to McCarthy and a few moments later Brooks was turned into a charging bull with Zinke holding Brooks back and covering Brook’s mouth. The swamp on full display there.. I’d say Gaetz received some concession in relation to the armed services committee and the military budget.Maybe transparency where Brooks wanted none.
