I read “Innocents Abroad” every few years.

“Is he dead?”

I really do think that our cultures may be slightly different.

Undoubtedly.

For example I have heard any number of American children reminisce about shooting other children with BB Guns in a game of tag. Certainly not something I would have thought of doing. Shooting at anything alive was reserved for situations when your life was in danger.

Makes trying to saw through someone's kite string seem positively benign.

Yes, there are quite a few, and all good reads. Fraser managed to put Flashman into just about every historical situation you can think of from around 1840 until the early 1900s. I’ll always be disappointed that Fraser died before publishing an account of Flashman’s exploits during the American Civil War, though.

Where’s the videos? This has tremendous potential!

Hire OJ as the MC for next year’s event.

Does he have him at Isandlwana? Or Rorke’s Drift?

Among the many stupid ways to die this one is right up there.

Yes, in the story Flashman and the Tiger, in the book of the same name.

[No; I haven’t. Thanks for the head’s up. I’ll have to check it out. I know of Fraser, though. There was a whole series of Flashman books, right?]

I recommend Bernard Cornwell’s Sharpe series for a look at the wars of the Napoleonic era, including a stint covering the British expeditions against the various Indian kingdoms and principalities that fought instead of accepting generous stipends from the Crown in exchange for their submission.

I’ve been told I should be an accountant for my ability to do simple math in my head. I would go bonkers sitting behind a desk.

I read a couple Cornwell books a few years ago, but they were not of the Sharpe series and what I read was out of sequence.

This past year I have been on a Ken Follett binge. When I finish that, I’ll get into some of Cornwell’s series (if my local library has them).

Thanks for the tip!

Welcome. There’s also the Saxon stories series, if you’re interested in a fictional treatment of how England came to be a unified political entity. The incorporation of Ireland, Scotland and Wales into Great Britain was to come later.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Saxon_Stories

It covers both human sacrifice and slavery.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slavery_in_Britain#Before_1066

Human sacrifice was a continuation of Druidic traditions among the pagan natives, but also imported by Norse and Danish raiders.

Weird customs there in the subcontinent.

Yeah, but while they're at it, more sacred cows spectating at celebrations with kite battles needed.
