Didn't read your own article did you?

Military analysts say Bakhmut has little strategic value. It is not a garrison town or a transport hub or a major centre of population. Before the invasion, there were about 70,000 people living there. The city was best known for its salt and gypsum mines and huge winery. It holds no particular geographic importance. As one Western official put it, Bakhmut is "one small tactical event on a 1,200-kilometre front line".

Putin’s musings about Peter and Catherine suggest otherwise, plus it seems he clearly expected Germany to be forced to leave NATO in exchange for Russian gas and to demand that Poland and the former Warsaw Pact nations leave NATO to reestablish a Russian sphere of influence over Eastern Europe. The fact that he failed doesn’t diminish the intent.

I was in Ukraine several years ago. It struck me as like Poland in the mid-90s, which is to say if they had access to European markets and cleaned up their government they’d quickly catch up. Russia, on the other hand, is a basket case and apart from those sharing in the spoils in Moscow and St. Petersburg far poorer than Ukraine.

Uke’s are stupid by nature. They love Nazis.

Sorry, but that kind of thinking only comes from Russians who are drinking the Kool-aid put out by Putin.

We all know what Russian military capabilities are. Those Ukrainians you think are stupid have stopped the Russian military and are ripping it apart day by day.

If you are right that Ukrainians are stupid then Russians must be utter morons.

Maybe that is why the Russian soldiers end up laying dead in ditches in Ukraine.

It’s the same Untermenschen rhetoric the world heard from the NSDAP while they were busy stuffing millions into ovens. There are Nazis involved here this time, too. They come from Putin’s Russia and its duped fellow travellers.

Absolutely. Ukraine is winning on til tok. It’s a shame. We have real enemies. This conflict wasn’t needed, but the west needs their wars.

Someone kept telling me I was wrong about Bakhmut for several months. Glad to be vindicated. Next up to fall is Avdiivka.

“Who is Bakhmut?”

Actually, “What is Bakhmut”? is a better question.

As to your answer, “Bakhmut” was the name given to Artemivsk when it was occupied by Ukraine.

It has now been liberated, so that name will soon no longer be heard, and we’ll be back to Artemivsk.

It’s a strategically worthless mining town out in the boonies.

It is a very valuable transportation hub. That is why Ukraine spent years fortifying it and sacrificed so many of its soldiers defending it.

Regarding the war itself, I don’t see NATO borders as magical lines: if Putin succeeds here, he’ll go after the Baltics or Poland next. And allowing all of Europe’s wealth and technical know-how to join with Russia and China cannot possibly be in US interests, so the US should act to see that Russia gains nothing from this war so it won’t be tempted to try again any time soon.

An earlier post you said “Russia doesn’t have the gloves to take off. It’s simply incapable. Look at Russian aviation. Being unable to overcome UA air defense, they have to fly low and slow, which limits the range and number of bases from which they can operate and leaves them vulnerable to MANPADS. Plus the wear and tear on aging airframes, maintenance issues, etc., seriously reduce the number of sorties. Ground troops lack sufficient mobility and above all training, making them unable to adapt to changing circumstances. This has improved over the course of the war, but recent losses at Vuhledar and Aavdivka suggest not by much.
Putin simply does not have Stalin’s ability to coerce new divisions into existence. Russia’s political weakness also hamstrings its operations because Putin cannot call up troops from the major metropolitan areas of Moscow and St. Petersburg because of fear of the political fallout. The Russian government is also wracked by internal political struggles with possibly deadly consequences for the higher ups. Shoigu’s daughter and her family are cooling their heels in the UAE for a reason. Not exactly a vote of confidence in the system. Like Hitler, Putin plays favorites and sets commanders against one another and gives orders impossible or destructive to fulfill.”

Which is it? They can’t be that worthless and at the same time be a threat to take over all of Europe.

Time frame. Even if there is a ceasefire or some negotiated peace later this year, if there aren’t real security guarantees for Ukraine, Russia will just rebuild its military and try again. If it wins this war, the political ramifications in Europe will be great and it will rebuild its forces and try to grab the Baltics. To be deterred from future aggression Russia needs to be sufficiently defeated that it won’t try again for a long time if ever. That means basically gaining nothing from this war.
