When I worked for a while as a liquor store clerk in Van Nuys California in the early 70s, I kept my .45 Condition One in a shelf directly under me at the counter. If someone showed up that made me hinky, my hand went under the counter and the safety came off.
Never had to use it, but it was comforting.
