No, you’re wrong. If it was “kill” then every soldier and cop who killed somebody in self defense is guilty of mortal sin. That’s not true.
You need to have a serious talk with whatever pastor or priest has led you astray. Killing in self defense is fine Biblically speaking.

The KJV says thou shalt not kill, but the original Hebrew word that was translated “kill”, is murder.
