This could turn out to be a very important discovery...in health and disease as well as in paleoanthropology.

Ah yes, I've heard about this unfortunate accident. There was an explosion in the Rogaine factory if I remember right... ;)

Humans and chimps share more than 98 percent of their DNA, so a few genes must make a big difference. Mugabe (or Clinton, or Osama, or Ted Bundy-- pick your human villain) and I probably share 99.99 percent of our genes, so a few genes must make a BIG difference.
I couldn't resist. Interesting article.

A gene that separates humans from the apes and all other animals seems to have disappeared from humans up to three million years ago, just before they first stood upright, researchers said on Monday. Most animals have the gene but people do not -- and it may be somehow involved in the expansion of the brain, the international team of researchers said. The same could be said for the baculum as well. That makes an even bigger difference.

Next step: figure out a way to turn off the gene in Chimps. When that's complete, put on Planet of the Apes on an endless loop and watch what happens...

"It happened after the time that our ancestors stood upright, when their hands and so on were like ours, but their brains are still same size as that of chimpanzees," Varki said. That's about the same time NFL and NBA were formed, isn't it? ;-)

Oh, U-Turn, I thought you were trying to use Ugene to make a case for Ugenics. :-)

"Oh, U-Turn, I thought you were trying to use Ugene to make a case for Ugenics."Isee.
Yea, good point.
Never thought about the application(s) of the UGene.
A real Pandora's Box, this issue.
Opens up (to scrutiny) the other vowels.
Like for instance, the validity of an A-Hole or Ebonics?
...oh, & 'O', too. :o)

As I see it, evolution is an ideological doctrine. If it were only a "scientific theory", it would have died a natural death 50 - 70 years ago; the evidence against it is too overwhelming and has been all along. The people defending it are doing so because they do not like the alternatives to an atheistic basis for science and do not like the logical implications of abandoning their atheistic paradigm and, in conducting themselves that way, they have achieved a degree of immunity to what most people call logic.
