two incredibly bright flashes just below the horizon.

One possibility is a short in the high tension lines or local distribution lines in the power grid. A vehicle hitting a pole or a tree contacting the wires would do it. It could have been a couple of bolides, but two in the same area in a short time is highly unlikely.
