the Oxford scientists maintain that the flame-haired have inherited a fiery temper and tendency to be unruly

"Not only that, but they probably drank too much " said James Cromwell of Oxford University.

Mitochondrial DNA is only inherited from the mother ...

Just FYI, there's recently been reported evidence of paternal inheritance.

Mark Twain wrote about the French long before the French added the art of appeasement to their highly developed art of cuisine: "There is nothing lower than the human race -- except the French." He added: "The French are the connecting link between man & the monkey."

Not quite. They opened up the possibility that some of the mitochondria from the tail of the sperm may be able to contaminate the cytoplasm of the egg. The entire sperm does not normally enter the egg and the head does not contain any mitochondria. It was a good article, but actually lacked direct evidence of paternal mtDNA transmisson to offspring.

Thanks for the clarification. It does seem likely though that "contamination" is equivalent to paternal inheritance unless the egg has some way of killing the foreign mitochondria. The latter seems unlikely since I recall reading about a mitochondria "transplant" into a woman's eggs to make them viable.
