Got it.

Y'know, as you point out, it is remarkable that folks aren't as conscious of the importance of 1071 as they should be. Like 1066, it is one of the pivotal dates in history.

Until you mentioned 1066, I didn't make the correlation. Oe vey, just a few years before the Turkish attack on the Byzantine empire with tens of thousands of men involved on both sides, a battle was being fought in southern England for control of a small island that would have enormous repercussions a few hundred years later. And this battle was fought with just a few thousand men.

IMHO Manzikert was the decisive battle because it led to the loss of the Anatolian heartland of the Empire. Without Anatolia the Empire was little more than a city state.

Still, the Empire had a thousand year run and Constantinople was in its day the metropolis of the world. The Byzantines sheltered Western Europe from invasion until the West was growing powerful and wealthy.

Yeah, that's the thread I stole the link from. (click on TURKISHCHICKS in the keywords. I'm too lazy right now to post the link.)

Like your post #83 bump.

While the Anatolian part of the empire was indeed the jewel of Byzantium (and it should never have fallen in the first place), it is not fair to say that the empire after that was little more than a city-state. It was still very powerful (though considerably weakened) and lasted for another two centuries.

I would say that if the petty jealousies between the quarrelsome western knights and the Byzantine empire could have been resolved, it is likely that the empire would not have fallen until, at the very least, Temujin's armies started attacking from the east. And possibly not even then (since Temujin's forces were stopped cold turkey by the Mamelukes of Egypt).

I would have enjoyed seeing the Byzantine Empire survive. I find the history of the Empire fascinating.

the last vestiges of the Roman Empire which had kept the Moslem hordes at bay for centuries was finally overrun.

Having been softened up by the Crusaders a couple centuries earlier. Rome got their way, and still do.
