The heightened scrutiny is to determine whether the bulge is living and evolving.

A good example of the misuse of the words "living" and "evolving."

There are places in Yellowstone where the magma is no more that 3 miles from the surface

I wonder if a nuke would breach that puppy ?

Good Lord that is a huge affected area. If that thing went up it would be the end of the US.

I think there are parts of Yellowstone so unstable that a well-placed nuke would (God forbid) make the whole basin unravel.

This subject came up a little more than a year ago:  Super Volcano In Yellowstone National Park.  It's a little frightening to see seismic activity in the Yellowstone region.

Santorini's in Greece, isn't it?

Aegean Islands.

Map of Aegean Islands

Santorini Greece (nice Web site; take a look at the pictures and the map, which is under "General Info'. The map shows the shape of the island, greatly affected by the massive eruption.)

Somebody should come up with a plan on how to figuratively “lance the boil”.

Relieve the pressure by drilling or a small nuclear device.
