They have argued, for example, that Caligula's renowned plan to make his horse a consul was really a joke that his subjects failed to comprehend.
Another example of "Reality extends no farther than the bounds of my own imagination."

The early Christianization of the Southlands had at least as much influence on encouraging the Viking raids. Rollo, the grandfather of William the Conquerer was a Christian.
The Collisieum was built to further the semi-religious practice of human sacrifice. Merely slaying was not acceptable, the potential for sacrifice had an element of willingness to it. The (expensive) gladiators would often both be wounded, and often would both die. Where one was crippled, the sponsor of the games would be looked to for guidance: would the person crippled be dispatched, or suffer the mercies of the Greco-Roman doctors. Of course the crowd exerted a strong influence over the sponsor.
I kind of liked old Claudius. Just like him to restore a street, and avoid offending the G-ds.

"Suspicious of the very unanimity of the ancient sources, modern scholars have suggested they could have been politically biased."
I have suspicion that many modern scholars are politically biased.
And what's with the apologetic in the article that says he had an unhappy childhood?
Good job, praetorian guards!

The Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantium) fell in 1453. The Western Roman Empire fell centuries earlier.
