Diplomatic Reception Room 9:20 A.M. EDT THE PRESIDENT: Last night, the United States brought the world’s number one terrorist leader to justice. Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is dead. He was the founder and leader of ISIS, the most ruthless and violent terror organization anywhere in the world. The United States has been searching for Baghdadi for many years. Capturing or killing Baghdadi has been the top national security priority of my administration. U.S. Special Operations Forces executed a dangerous and daring nighttime raid in northwestern Syria and accomplished their mission in grand style. The U.S. personnel were incredible. I got to...

New York City is spreading its homeless crisis across the nation by quietly sending homeless people to other cities in the U.S., all without giving the receiving cities a heads up. The city has deployed local homeless families to 373 cities across the U.S.— from Honolulu to Louisiana— with a year’s worth of rent as part of Mayor Bill de Blasio’s “Special One-Time Assistance Program,” without alerting local officials in those cities, the New York Post reported. The Post reported that city taxpayers spent $89 million on rent to ship 5,074 homeless families—or 12,482 individuals— out of the city since...

WASHINGTON—The ozone hole near the South Pole this year is the smallest since it was discovered, but it is more due to freakish Antarctic weather than efforts to cut down on pollution, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Nasa) reported. This fall, the average hole in Earth’s protective ozone layer is 3.6 million square miles (9.3 million square kilometers). That’s down from a peak of 10.3 million square miles (26.6 million square kilometers) in 2006. This year’s hole is even smaller than the one first discovered in 1985. “That’s really good news,” Nasa scientist Paul Newman said Tuesday. “That means more...

All poll workers in California will be trained on how to properly interact with and assist transgender and gender-nonconforming voters when they cast ballots. California Secretary of State Alex Padilla (D) announced the new initiative last week, saying his office is partnering with the Equality California Institute ahead of next year’s presidential primary. The training will provide county registrars with materials detailing best practices for assisting voters whose “gender identity, expression, or pronouns don’t match their name on the voter rolls,” according to a news release from Padilla’s office. Clear signage such as brochures and posters regarding voters’ rights will...

“‘You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me; and you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life. I do not receive glory from men; but I know you, that you do not have the love of God in yourselves. I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name, you will receive him’” (John 5:39–43). Merely knowing the facts of Scripture, without hiding them in your heart and acting on them, will...

Former Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.), the longest-serving African American member of Congress, died Sunday at age 90, according to multiple reports. Conyers, a veteran of the Korean War and participant in the Civil Rights movement, was co-founder of the Congressional Black Caucus and chaired the House Oversight Committee from 1989 to 1995. He also introduced the bill establishing a national holiday commemorating Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. Conyers resigned from his Detroit-area seat in 2017 after serving for over 50 years amid multiple allegations of sexual harassment from young female staffers. His grandnephew Ian Conyers lost the 2018 Democratic primary...

The Washington Post on Sunday published an excerpt from an upcoming book foreword by the late Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) in which the congressman hails America’s civil servants. In the excerpt, from Cummings’ foreword to “In Defense of Public Service: How 22 Million Government Workers Will Save Our Republic,” by Cedric L. Alexander, Cummings described his experience as chair of the House Oversight Committee, which oversees federal workers. “When people in the leadership of the nation attack our courts, the members of our Congress, our civil servants and our media, they are attacking the glue that holds our diverse nation...

Preface On October 11, 2019, an explosion rocked passenger ferry Ytterøyningen while dockside at Sydnes, Norway. The vessel, recently refit with a lithium-ion battery hybrid drive, is part of the new fleet of low and zero emission vessels being deployed across Norway and other parts of the world. The vessel was at dock having been pulled from service the night before due to a fire in the lithium propulsion batteries; a condition known as thermal runaway. The root cause of the fire is still to be announced, but the secondary explosion caused significant structural damage to the vessel; likely a...

Psalm 94 94 O Lord, the God who avenges! O God who avenges, reveal your splendor. 2 Rise up, O judge of the earth. Pay back the proud. 3 O Lord, how long will the wicked, how long will the wicked celebrate? 4 They spew out threats and speak defiantly; all the evildoers boast. 5 O Lord, they crush your people; they oppress the nation that belongs to you. 6 They kill the widow and the resident foreigner, and they murder the fatherless. 7 Then they say, “The Lord does not see this; the God of Jacob does not take...

During his press conference Sunday morning following his announcement of the U.S. military operation to take out ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, President Trump said some congressional leaders were pre-briefed on the operation but not others: “We notified some; others are being notified as I speak,” Trump said. “We were going to notify them last night but we decided not to do that because Washington leaks like I’ve never seen before,” Trump said. “There is no country in the world that leaks like we do and Washington is a leaking machine.” Trump said that U.S. forces would have been placed...

The CIA targeted and killed ISIS spokesman Abu al-Hassan al-Muhajir in a separate raid, from the one that killed ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, a U.S. official confirmed to The Daily Beast. “We never stopped patrolling, we never stopped analyzing intel and developing targets. We just slowed down during the Turkey invasion,” the official told The Daily Beast’s Spencer Ackerman. Newsweek reports that as Trump announced the death of Baghdadi, Hellfire missiles targeted Muhajir by Ayn al-Bayda, near Jarablus in Aleppo province. The operation that targeted Muhajir comes just one day after a raid targeted ISIS’ leader in the Idlib...

Psalms 64 For the music director, a psalm of David. Listen to me, O God, as I offer my lament! Protect my life from the enemy’s terrifying attacks. 2 Hide me from the plots of evil men, from the crowd of evildoers. 3 They sharpen their tongues like swords; they aim their arrows, a slanderous charge, 4 in order to shoot down the innocent in secluded places. They shoot at him suddenly and are unafraid of retaliation. 5 They encourage one another to carry out their evil deed. They plan how to hide snares, and boast, “Who will see them?”...

Before 2017, the national uninsured rate for children declined for nearly 10 years; however, the share of uninsured children suddenly increased that year (the most recent year available). In Georgia, the number of children without health insurance increased by 21,000. There are many reasons that progress to covering more children has stalled, including cuts to outreach efforts that help ensure that families enroll their children in Medicaid or PeachCare (Georgia’s version of the federal Children’s Health Insurance Program, known as CHIP), a lack of funding for marketplace subsidies, changing federal rules governing the marketplace or immigrant parents choosing not to...
