SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 8 — As the health officer of Alameda County, Dr. Anthony Iton is prepared to make tough choices if SARS re-emerges this winter or spring, as many infectious disease experts fear. The supporting members of the Alameda City Council, California, have decided to take it upon themselves to officially support the United Nations approach of endless debate in the United Nations Security Council towards Iraq's non-compliance. ALAMEDA, Calif., March 31 — The entire teaching staff, and some administrators, have received pink slips for the next academic year from the Alameda school district, which serves this island city of 75,000 across the bay from San Francisco. No one expects the schools to close in the fall, but the layoff notices, in keeping with a state legal requirement, are an indication of the serious financial troubles haunting California's schools. I have been involved in a disagreement with the Alameda Unified School District concerning their support of teachers tying up students and duct-taping them to the floor. I am asking for your help. First, here's the latest status. The Alameda Board of Education voted to dismiss the appeal to the complaint because of the following: no one else complained. the pedagogical style was sound. it was not unsafe. students need to have an emotional response in order to learn. to deny teachers this style is stepping on academic freedom. they didn't mention anything about the traumatized child. they didn't mention...

Alameda Gun Show Ban case History: The County of Alameda passed an ordinance that prohibited possession of firearms on county property, in a thus-far successful effort to close down the T&S Gun Show formerly operated by Russ & Sally Nordyke at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton. Today at 10:00am, the California Supreme Court published their opinion in Great Western Shows v. County of Los Angeles, and in Nordyke v. King, two cases that will define the future of gun shows in California. In short, they ruled that a county can ban gun shows as well as ban possession of firearms on county property, despite the numerous problems that this creates for not only gun show promoters but also law-abiding citizens.
