Dear Mr. and Mrs. Huber, FIRE has come to the defense of a philosophy professor who has been stripped of his classes for refusing to veil his religious identity from students. Dr. James Tuttle, a Catholic philosopher at Lakeland Community College, near Cleveland, Ohio, was told that he might "be happier in a sectarian classroom" and was threatened with dismissal for making statements on his syllabi and in class that disclosed his religious faith and its effect on his views of ethics and philosophy. Most good universities have at least one conservative professor on campus. When, for example, some group at Harvard wants to hold a panel discussion on some political matter, it can bring out the political theorist Harvey Mansfield to hold up the rightward end. At Princeton it's Robert George. At Yale it's Donald Kagan. These dissenters lead interesting lives. On November 14th the Ithaca College Republican welcomed Dr. Alan Kors, Professor of History at the University of Pennsylvania, to give a lecture on their campus. Dr. Kors co-authored The Shadow University: The Betrayal of Liberty on America's Campuses with Harvey Siverglate and is President of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE).
