  • Scientists say Trump policies will kill 80,000 people per decade

The blatant use of science for political gain is not new, but it's clearly getting worse. All kinds of "science" is being used to justify policies that fit a particular political agenda. Case in point: Some Harvard scientists have examined the environmental policies of the Trump administration and concluded that up to 80,000 people a decade will die as a result of political decisions that they disagree with. It used to be that such pronouncements were dismissed as "unscientific." Today, it's front page news.

Some drivers are questioning whether the device's communications system could allow the state, the police or private companies to track a driver's movements.Dealerships are expected to sell the plates for $699, not including installation costs. Users also must pay a monthly fee of about $7. *** Here is the really funny part ***city officials will talk first with labor representatives about assurances that the city will not use the plate technology as a monitoring device on city employees.

An atheist was walking through the woods. 'What majestic trees! 'What powerful rivers! 'What beautiful animals! He said to himself. Suddenly, he heard a rustling in the bushes behind him. He turned to look . . . and saw a 7-foot grizzly bear charge towards him. He ran as fast as he could along the path. He looked over his shoulder & saw that the bear was closing on him .... He looked over his shoulder again, and the bear was even closer .... and then ..... He tripped and fell. Rolling over to pick himself up, he found the...

Presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump says he will seek to get along with House Speaker Paul Ryan and other party leaders for the general election, Ed Klein writes in a blog post to be published Tuesday. "I first thought I might be better off without Ryan and the support of the party," Klein quotes Trump. "I've done great as a rebel up to now with fantastic crowds everywhere, and for a time I was going to play the meeting in Washington as a rebel." But Trump told Klein that while being a rebel in the primary season is fine, the...

Rising stock prices and home values pushed the net worth of U.S. households higher in the fourth quarter, a reassuring sign for the outlook for consumer spending. The increase added $1.52 trillion to the total wealth of American families, putting it at $82.91 trillion, a report by the Federal Reserve showed on Thursday. The increase in net wealth was the largest since the fourth quarter of 2013. While U.S. consumers have appeared somewhat shy in their spending habits in recent months, Thursday's data suggests their strengthening financial footing could help convince them to open their wallets more.

THIS AMAZING VIDEO from the Gaza-based Watania news agency shows Israel’s controversial ‘knock on the roof’ air-strike warning in action. The video demonstrates how a small missile strikes the house across the road from where the footage was captured. This is a warning that the house has been targeted for an air-strike. About 15 minutes later the house is completely destroyed by two separate bombs from what the agency says was two F16 fighter planes. Most of this fifteen minute period is edited out of the video. Rubble and debris are thrown into the air but when the dust clears...

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Black students are more likely to be suspended from U.S. public schools -- even as tiny preschoolers. The racial disparities in American education, from access to high-level classes and experienced teachers to discipline, were highlighted in a report released Friday by the Education Department's civil rights arm. The suspensions -- and disparities -- begin at the earliest grades. Black children represent about 18 percent of children in preschool programs in schools, but they make up almost half of the preschoolers who are suspended more than once, the report said. Six percent of the nation's districts with preschools...

"....but this stuff is not being said in an extremist corner of the internet — it’s being said in a middle-class suburban salon in an area where 30% (or more) of the businesses are now shuttered, and houses are being foreclosed upon and then re-occupied seemingly overnight, creating what the stylist called “a neighborhood full of changes and no hope. Forget about new small businesses,” he said, gesturing across the street, where a small food shop’s “opening soon” banner had become sun-faded and worn, even as the door remained locked. “That guy is never going to open.” “I can’t get...
  • Obama grants Holder request on 'Furious' documents as contempt vote looms (Executive Privilege)

President Obama has granted an 11th-hour request by Attorney General Eric Holder to exert executive privilege over Fast and Furious documents, a last-minute maneuver that appears unlikely to head off a contempt vote against Holder by Republicans in the House. The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee is expected to forge ahead Wednesday morning with its meeting on the contempt resolution anyway. If the vote proceeds, Republicans have more than enough votes on committee to pass the resolution. However, Holder would not be considered held in contempt of Congress unless and until the full House approves the measure.

An open letter to the Obama campaign Byron Tau reports at Politico that the Koch Companies have released a response to the Obama campaign’s fundraising letter of this past Friday directly assaulting the Koch brothers and their business. John wrote about the disgusting nature of the Obama capping fundraising letter here, alternately quoting from and responding to it. It is a letter that comes straight out of the Alinsky playbook. Tau links to the Koch Companies’ response, a letter to the Obama campaign from Phillip Ellender, head of Government Affairs and Public Relations at the Koch Companies. It seems to...
  • AMD cuts 800m transistors from Bulldozer spec

AMD told extremetech.com that its Bulldozer core does not feature 2 billion transistors as previously reported, but rather 1.2 billion. The die size remained unchanged, at 315 square millimeters, so it turns out AMD is only counting transistors actually used by the chip. It seems the other 800 million are looking for work on craigslist and dreaming of moving out of their mom's basement. AMD attributed the whole issue to a simple error, but the move raised more questions than it answered. On one hand, it means AMD’s new architecture doesn’t really need 2 billion transistors to attain decent performance,...

Terry Jones, the Florida pastor who oversaw the burning of a Koran last month, said he did not feel responsible for the violent protest at a United Nations compound in Afghanistan today that left at least 11 dead. Instead, he said the violence proved his point. "We wanted to raise awareness of this dangerous religion and dangerous element," Jones said. "I think [today's attack] proves that there is a radical element of Islam." As for the 11 dead, which included seven U.N. staffers and guards, Jones told "Nightline" anchor Bill Weir, "We do not feel responsible, no." The deaths followed...
