As millionaires and billionaires continue to push universal background checks and handgun registration in Washington state, their donations for Initiative 594 (I-594) have reached "nearly $9.5 million."

WASHINGTON - Love, hope and outrage. Those emotions were running high Friday night in a D.C. neighborhood. The community gathered to support and pray for the family of a 9-year old who was shot while playing outside. The little boy's mother told us he is making progress and slowly healing. Hundreds of demonstrators are expected to march across the Brooklyn Bridge to call for tougher gun control laws. Saturday's demonstration, which comes after a wave of mass shootings across the US, is being underwritten by former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, one of the nation's most visible gun control advocates. Back in May, Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley (who has presidential aspirations) signed into law some of the country's strictest gun control laws after they were shoved through the legislature in the name of Sandy Hook. Thousands who opposed to the bill were ignored. O'Malley was vocal in his support for the laws and made it a point to stress that the new laws would reduce crime and keep Maryland safe.

Gov. Brian Sandoval has vetoed a bill requiring background checks for gun sales between private parties, saying it “imposes unreasonable burdens and harsh penalties upon law-abiding Nevadans, while doing little to prevent criminals from unlawfully obtaining firearms.” In his veto message, the governor said background checks would “constitute an erosion of Nevadans’ Second Amendment rights under the United States Constitution and may subject otherwise law-abiding citizens to criminal prosecution.”

But how could this happen? California has had an assault weapons ban since 1989, progressively tightened over a decade. This law has been on the books, and enforced, since the killer was born. The only lawful way for a Californian to possess a high-capacity magazine is if he owned it before 2000 – when the killer was eleven years old. California passed a firearms-transfer background check requirement that took effect on January 1, 1991, which checks not only for felony and violent misdemeanor convictions and pending charges, but also for involuntary mental hospital commitments.

Gov. Brian Sandoval has an opportunity to save lives with a stroke of his pen. The Nevada Legislature passed Senate Bill 221, which closes dangerous loopholes in the background check system that enable criminals to get their hands on guns. All that’s left is for Sandoval to sign it, but he has threatened to veto the life-saving measure.

In his first extended public apperance since getting out of prison, Plaxico Burress announced Monday in New York City that he has partnered with the National Urban League and the Brady Center to combat gun violence. “I want to see every child have a chance to succeed. I have an opportunity to make a difference,” Burress said via the New York Post.
